We all make them. Let’s laugh, learn, and fix them together!
π€ Why Do We Make These Mistakes?
Learning English in India is unique. We grow up mixing Hindi, regional languages, and English together β which is amazing! But sometimes, our mother tongue sneaks into our English and creates some funny β and very common β mistakes.
The good news? Once you know them, fixing them is easy! π
β Most Common Mistakes β And How to Fix Them
1. π “I am having a car”
This is one of the most common mistakes Indians make. We use “have” for possession β not “having.”
β “I am having a car.”
β
“I have a car.”
π‘ Simple Rule: For things you own or possess, always use have β never having.
2. π “What is your good name?”
This is a direct translation from Hindi β “Aapka shubh naam kya hai?” In English, all names are good names! π
β “What is your good name?”
β
“What is your name?” or “May I know your name?”
3. π “I am here since 2 hours”
We often confuse since and for. Here’s the easy fix:
- Use since for a specific point in time β “since 2 o’clock”
- Use for for a duration β “for 2 hours”
β “I am here since 2 hours.”
β
“I have been here for 2 hours.”
π‘ Pro Tip: Since = starting point. For = duration. Remember this and you’ll never confuse them again!
4. π “Do one thing⦔
In India, we say “ek kaam karo” all the time. But in English, this phrase sounds very strange to native speakers!
β “Do one thing β call me tomorrow.”
β
“Just call me tomorrow.” or “Here’s what you can do β call me tomorrow.”
5. π€¦ “Prepone the meeting”
This is a classic! Indians invented the word “prepone” β but it does not exist in standard English. The opposite of postpone is simply “reschedule to an earlier time.”
β “Let’s prepone the meeting.”
β
“Let’s reschedule the meeting to an earlier time.”
π It’s Okay to Make Mistakes!
Every mistake is a stepping stone. The fact that you are reading this means you are already ahead of most people. Don’t fear mistakes β they are proof that you are trying. πͺ
π Final Thought
Making mistakes in English does not make you bad at English β it makes you human. Laugh at them, learn from them, and keep going. Fluency is not about being perfect. It’s about never giving up. π
“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” β Albert Einstein
